It shouldn't smell bad when you vacuum. Either you have a malfunctioning vacuum or something is wrong with the carpet. I'd have the carpet cleaned and the vacuum cleaner serviced.

Most likely it's the vacuum that is smelly, so change the bag in the vacuum. All the things you suck up are just sitting inside that bag, and when you turn on the vacuum, air pushes the odors into the room. If the vacuum stinks, change the bag. Never wait until the bag is totally full to change it. I usually change a bag every month.

You can also wash the vacuum area where the bag goes. (make sure the vacuum is unplugged before changing the bag). Take a damp cloth and wipe the machine. If the bag has a removable plastic cover, that can be hosed off, then allowed to dry.

If the odor continues once you do the above, it is possible the spindle thing under the machine is not working properly. Tip the machine over and look under it.If you see a lot of hair and threads remove them.

If all the above are done and an odor is still there, the belt might need replaced. (very easy to do, you can do it in a couple minutes).

All the above are cheap and easy, and just part of vacuum maintenance.

Sounds like the odor is being vented from the vacuum. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and vacuum. Also change the bag if you have the bag kind.

It doesn't smell bad at my house when I vacuum. Perhaps your carpets need a good steam cleaning.

Sometimes if your carpet has a lot of dust in it vacuuming will stir that up. Try shampooing your carpets and see if that helps.

it shouldn't. If you are talking about the dust, you are using the wrong vacuum. Try a Kirby. It has triple filtration, and the usage and overall presentation is impressive! Kinda pricey, but well worth the $

it's time to take your vacuum cleaner in for servicing. As long as you provide proper maintenence to your machine you wont get the smell.

dust collects mold....and you can smell it when you turn it on...

best to get a new vacuum, becuase if this is the case, then you're vacuum isn't getting as much suction...because it's clogged with dust
