What I really want is something that is functional as well as pretty.

If you want to keep deer out of your garden you could try this cheap functional (works for me in SC) trick: Save your hair, pet hair, dryer lint, vacuum bag stuff, and put it in a sock. Several actually, and hang around your garden - even place on the ground. Plus, save urine (in a coffee can - "aroma seal" no pun intended) and sprinkle around the perimeter. It really works. Sorry I didn't have a pretty solution for you.

Produce the produce!! yum

go to a barbar/beauty shop get some hair or pee where you see the deer. your fence would have to be really high if you got really hungry deer or you could just start feeling the deer a bag of corn and salt away from your garden under $20 for both deer needs food too

Not gonna look too pretty with a fence . You can use the scarecrow - works really well.
