I think the media reports too much of the real news and that's why the opposition always have the upper hand on us. As far as television shows go, I think they give a off the impression that negative is a good thing.

you know this isn't a new idea. its long been known that tv has become like this; a distraction from the real world. but i think it started out good, and like most good ideas became distorted with time.

the thing is...we live in america where we have so many choices. and that is included in our tv. why are we complaining about all these choices when we would STILL be complaining if we had a limited set of channels to watch. otherwise if we had monitored programming..what's to say big brother won't be out there feeding us other proganda and mindnumbing information to keep us further distracted. (big brother from 1984 not the show! akh such a disgrace)

and let's face it, the world we live in, is essentially run by money. not becasue ppl are invariably selfish and greedy, but money is what keeps you safe, gives you a home, provides food, heatlhcare, medical care, gives you transportation and these are just the basic neccessities. there's also education and lots of other things cant think of now. so that's the first thing on ppl's mind. not helping others out, not saving the world, not broadening their minds.

its just the way the world works. and until we can satisfy everyone's basic needs and encourage helping of others in our community, school systems, and family environment..i don't know how we are going to progress.

Obviously True! It is downright embarassing and shocking how ignorant most people are in the US of real world issues and yet how full of manufactured images, stereotypes and commercially based "reality" being swallow. It seems to be making a large majority of people very shallow and phony!
Television is powerful, is like a modern myth machine shaping the way people view the world. I do believe it has positive sides too - such as introducing concepts and potentially teaching about issues to those who have no other outlet, but this is the rare exception. It seems like people are giving away their ability to think, imagine, and create for themselves while giant corporations are successfully numbing almost an entire country - like zombies! Ensuring their consumers. Do you honestly think the worlds richest men want us to have unbiased news about the world we are ravaging? Do you suppose they have any underlying agenda in what they show us? I WONDER!
Thankfully independent media exists and so does free will!

True, sadly to say. The biggest reason is because most people don't want to hear bad news.
On the same token, Americans love to hear exaggerated "news" about impending disasters. Its reached the point that when there is something truthful coming from the news agencies, people don't listen, because they've heard about a past disaster that never materialized.
Most Americans would rather watch so called "reality" shows, instead of a more worthy show on PBS or Discovery Channel.

False, we use television (main stream media included) to keep our minds off of the real issues. We are affraid of the truth and would rather live in a dream world created by funny antics, the bad guys losing, and gossip from peoples lives so ours don't seem so pointless and miserable.

American television keeps American minds off of real issues. I am not being anti-american or derrogatory in any way, but I believe the worldview presented in basic and extended cable lacks internationality. (Yes, including CNN). We see tickers of bombs all over the county or short sections about African poverty, but these are all shadowed by empty calories like Jolie's baby, Aaron Spelling's drama, Olivia Newton John's husband, and other completely useless tidbits of "news". CNN International is much more detailed, and interesting.
If you ask, "Why should I be interested in what happens in the rest of the world?" you may be an idiot, and not realize it yet. Every conflict that happens anywhere between humans is of concern to all of us.

Americans keep their minds off of the real issues and like to blame things like television, yes it is biased, but it does not turn itself on nor does it stop one from seeking the truth or independent news sources

True. TV does a lot of things. You can gain knowledge of things that interest you (ie history channel, discovery channel, science channel), it can also entertain you (ie comedy channel, movie channels), but it can also be a terrible waste of time. People should limit the amount of time spend just sitting and wasting away in front of the tv every night of the week. To me this is another significant factor for Americans being overweight, no activity. Go walk your dogs america, and take your spouses and kids with you.

I would say true to the extent that if you only watch shows which have little factual or news content. However news shows, documentaries, histories, etc. provide information about the world we live in and try to give information related to the real issues of our times.
