I pay about $10 a month for softener salt (The good stuff, anti bridgeing). Positives are cleaner clothes with less detergent, The need to use much less soap and shampoo's in the shower, and dishes from the washer without spots. The only downfall I can think of is water tastes slightly salty from softened taps. Most houses that are pre-plumed for a softener have a kitchen bypass. This means the dishwasher is usually not softened either, but the water tastes better.

I have one from Sears and buy the salt myself. We go thru about 5 bags a year... so about $20. The downfall? I haven't found one. We have had one several years and love it! Less soap, shampoo, detergents, etc.
