plan on adding durock over area to be tiled.60 yr old house and old tub not done correctly, and needs to stay intact until new one is finished.

The best way is to install the tub 1st . Add a rubber membrane, or heavey felt roofing paper at least 16" high from the top of the tub, and then rock over that. Caulk everything, and then you should be ready for tile that will last forever.

usually you frame the walls size of tub alowing an extra quarter inch front and back for any out of square condition in the walls. If your using durarock theres no need for drywall. dura rock to studs hold a couple of inches short at top and sides of where your tile will end and drywall from there. The dura rock should extend over the drip edge.
