If I remembewr rightly 42 is actually incorrect.
At the end of "So Long And Thanks For All The Fish" Ford pulls random Scrabble letters out of a bag to find out what the question is. It turns out to be what is 7 time 7? So the proper answer is 49.
I think that's right it's been about 10 years since I last read the book but I'm pretty sure.

They were searching for what the astounding question of existence, the universe and each and every thing. the answer changed into 40 2, although the question changed into "what's 7 x 5," which merely proved that there changed into some thing truly screwed up with each and every thing
