I've got Logitech 5.1 surround speakers ($80) on mine. But that requires a change in sound card. Any speaker setup beyond the standard 2.1 system will probably need a new card (look in your sound card settings to see what it will accomodate). Depending on how important sound is to you, could be a good investment. I game quite a bit, so surround sound is good. Otherwise, Harmon-Kardon, Creative, other models of Logitech. All are good. Bose is NOT a cheap option. But can't argue the quality. I've never had a problem with my Logitechs or Harmon-Kardons on my other computer.
Little bit of background if you're interested:
2.1 sound is standard: 2 satellite speakers with a sub-woofer
4.1: 4 satellites (left and right, front and back) with a sub
5.1: 5 satellites (left and right, front and back and a center channel) with a sub.
There is 6.1/7.1, but I'm not exactly sure what that entails. I think it adds a direct rear channel (6.1) or 2 front, 2 direct sides, 2 rear, and 1 center speaker channels (7.1). Both would have a sub.
You've got a lot of options. If you want to increase your sound quality, shop around, get reviews. Best of luck.

your best bet since it sounds like you like good music is logitech. if u want crisper sound tho you might want to also get a new sound card. depending on what you get this could cost anywhere from 80-300$. so if u just want to stick with the sound card you have, i dont think surround sound is acheivable. if you just want a simply 2.1 set up (2 speakers 1 subwoofer) then look at altec lansing! they have amazing speakers and sound clear.

Just get anything that is on sale at STAPLES. Their return policy is awesome, so if you do not like them, TAKE IT BACK. (no questions asked).
These cheapo speakers should come with a power cord or AC adapter. You should see a volume knob. You will probably find that CHEAP is good enough.

I have altec lansing ones. They're quite a few years old and have survived many moves.
Remeber you'll need a sound card capable of surround sound in order to use it. (there will be FOUR holes for the sound card instead of THREE)
