Well the main point is to encourage people to answer the questions and to give good answers.
By raking up points people get a feeling of "eliteness" and the points do come with little perks like being a featured user on some yahoo page etc.
The prizes are not really worth much in cash value. I guess it is good, otherwise we would see a lot of people post junk replies for the sake of getting points. The points give a good feeling to those who really like helping others.
Another good thing is people don't flood the system with too many questions as you have to "spend" the points to ask a question. After the initial 20 free questions, you have to answer at least 5 questions (or be selected as the best answer for 1 question, or login to Y!Answers for 10 days....) to ask two more questions.

The points are just for fun. Many people on this site ask and respond to serious questions. In doing so, they may be helping someone else. The points really mean nothing, and I hope they never do. These responses should be because we care to give them. I know I enjoy the process very much and will continue, even though the points will net me nothing more than pride in doing this. I feel really god when an asker picks my answer as best answer. That is a compliment to me, and I enjoy getting those kinds of compliments.

They encourage people to ask and answer more questions. Some of the other answerers have mentioned that you get "bragging rights". Well, your (sub)conscious desire to improve your reputation in the community will cause you to post more often.
This way, Yahoo! can get lots of answers (more than, say, Google), and take over the world;)

Points are to encourage good answers and prevent it from being a blog sight like Craigs list.
Besides it is fun. People would not answer as much without them
