Maria Sharapova is my dream girl. She is blonde, Russian, sexy, tall, athletic, famous, and rich. We would play tennis together, and our children would be tall, athletic and blonde.
When I found out that she was single, I rejoiced! I normally don't have extreme feelings about any girls, but in this case, I would be willing to make an extra effort to get to know her.
Since I am Mr. GQ, women flock to me all the time. Because of this, I never really had to make an effort to meet females... so my approach may not be the best, due to lack of experience. I want to be able to meet Maria before or after one of her tennis matches without looking like some crazy stalker (like those streakers who have been appearing at her matches).
About me: I am a sexy stud who makes a decent income as a systems analyst. I would not use Maria for her money; I just have a thing for hot female tennis players (I also had the hots for Anna Kournikova 5-10 years ago).

I love playing tennis and am very good at it, which would make us compatible.
So do you think an average guy (with above-average looks) like me stands a chance to land a date with Ms. Sharapova, or should I lower my standards a bit?

Mainstream and casual sports fans watch sports for the spectacle, as opposed to the much smaller niches of diehard enthusiasts of any particular sport. They each watch sports for different reasons. You can talk about equality and skill all day long, but the reality remains that the women guys will always want to watch will be the best-looking ones. Sure Danica Patrick is hot, but when she's driving, she's just another anonymous hunk of sheetmetal and corporate logos blasting around a track. And WNBA players may be highly skilled and extremely talented, but they're playing a sport that draws its biggest appeal from larger-than-life macho personalities and monster jams. Combine that with the fact that they wear baggy, unflattering clothing, and you're always going to play second fiddle to the NBA in the ratings. Sure, a devoted student of basketball will take note of the WNBA's strategy and technical prowess, but the average joe couch potato majority will flip the channel to watch the men's game or some beach volleyball. The most popular women's sports are the ones that highlight the female form -- figure skating, gymnastics, tennis (yes, they could make women stop wearing short skirts, but then they'd lose all but the most diehard male tennis fans as an audience).

You would probably have a better chance trying to date Maria Kirilenko. Kirilenko is Sharapova's good friend. Sharapova is okay looking, but Kirilenko is hot!!! There's no accounting for taste. Maybe ask Yuri if you could date his daughter. If he goes ballistic, your on your own.
