I have 2 jack russells, a boxer, a husky, pom.,fish and a stray cat. I actually paid about $700 for the boxer, the jacks and the pom, and well the fish were about $10.00 . The others were given to me. Is it stupid to have to pay money for a pet?

Absolutely stupid.

Buying pets just encourages more people to breed them when we already have a major companion pet overpopulation problem.

Rescued my kitten: Free + vet bills/shots etc

Adopted my Sheperd/Sharpei:100$ adoption fee included spay/microchip/vet check

Adopted my Sheperd mix for 60$ included neuter/microchip/vet check

Plus, I have two foster kitties who are recovering from URIs, not mine permanently, but fun to have extra kitties around and be able to do my part by volunteering my time and my home.

A french hamster 3€
Goldfish 2.50€
Turtle 15€
Nanday Conure 350€
Masked lovebird 90€

I love parrot's they're tame that why they're so expensive but it's worth it they live for along time and are really entertaining, and loveing they're part of the family and well behaved, they sit on their perch and I don't need to close their cage.

I've read wat the other people wrote and it's true that dogs shouldn't be breeded because there are too many but at the moment I'm studying and I'm hopeing to hatch parrot eggs in a few years and try and conserve some of the endangered species, nearby there's a tropical zoo where they do it.

I bought one dog for $60 (to cover his shots), the other dog was free, both cats were free and the turtle was free! Now it has cost a bit in vet bills, but that's required!

I think it is stupid to pay a fortune to buy a pet, now vet bills is another story! I always owned purebreds before and honestly mutts are the best dogs! Same with cats, my in-laws have a cat they paid $400 for and she is a snob, my free cat is the sweetest thing!

I have a chihuahua that I bought from a pet store that I worked at over 10 years ago. He cost me about $250.
Little did I know then about buying a dog/cat from a store.
I advocate adopting only. You can find pure breeds in shelters or giving away for free online or in the papers.

Its not stupid to pay for a pet. In my experience though if your willing to take in mongrels(bitsa's) and strays you'll never need to pay for your newly found friends. My dog(Blue heeler x Kelpie x Border collie) recently passed away, but she was a great dog. I had her for 11 and 1/2years because at 3 months old people wanted to get rid of her for digging holes. My cat was one of two kittens that a stray my sister picked up gave birth to. The cat my partner owns is also a refugee. And my horse cost my father quite a lot of money but not in the usual way. He bought the old mare for $150 and it probably cost him about $700 to get her in foal and then of course theres all the money you spend to keep them in feed. Like I said quite a bit of money by the end of it all. My mare is that foal, when my Dad died it was round the time she was due to be broken in for riding so I aquired a horse that has a great temprement that will no doubt be with me till she passes on in 15 to 20years time at a guess(maybe less but I hope not).

Only if you are buying a dog from a pet store because they could be sick and are breed in puppy mills.

I have two dogs currently. A Dalmantian who was 50 dollars and a Lab who was 50 dollars as well from the humane society.

No....we paid $250 for our Dachshund, we paid general adoption fees for our other animals, (another dog and a cat, a total of about fifty dollars each), and of course, our big ticket animals, a horse that cost $1500, and another horse that cost $3000. Gotta love it...we pay dollars to have four legged critters running around our homes. :-)

Personally, I think it is terribly pretentious to pay hundreds of dollars for a "name brand" dog when hundreds of beautiful dogs are being killed on a daily basis in dog pounds....

Mutts are the way to go! The mixing of the breeds or blood lines leads to smarter and genetically stronger dogs... just like the mixing of different "races" of people....

im a complete animal lover, 1 black labrador, 1 cat, 2 parakeets, 1 turtle and 1 rabbit.

the trick is, ive never paid a cent for any of those pets except my dog. each has its story of how i ended up with them. well my 12 year old female lab my parents bought me after i came out from the hospital when i was 11, i had survived an aneurism and my parents thought it was best to make me feel a little better having a best friend beside me. her name is laika and is 12 years old, she is one of the little loves of my life.

my cat, Happy, we adopted from a lady that had found her abandoned in the middle of nowhere in a box full of kittens. we couldnt say no.

my parakeets, Santiago and Lola, when i use to work at petco this guy walked in with a fast food bag, he asked if petco can take in animals, he told us that as he was eating out at a fast food restaurnt this parakeet flew in and began eating his food. the manager of petco said the store couldnt take it in, and the guy was helpless, so i had no choice. i namend him santiago and a week later found him a female to keep him company.

my turtle, Princeton, my neighbor once found a bunch of turtle eggs in his backyard, big surprise no? surprisingly only one hatched and it was my little Princeton. he is 6 now, still tiny but growing. my neighbor had an old tank and a heating lamp, i didnt get to pay a cent for the necessities.

my little rabbit, Chikee, one day with my bf driving along a curve i noticed some animal hopping along the main street at the corner. i stoped and looked closer, it was a rabbit, the floppy eared one. i thought, 'odd this rabbit is eating grass hopping along the sidewalk in a big main street??' i took him in and weeks later noticed he was deaf. no wonder, he wasnt scared of hte noisy cars and even the people. he keeps me company here in italy as i study here abroad, good companion buddy for when it comes to stayng up late studying.

out of all these animals, how much have i spent in 'buying' them? zero. expect my Laika :) she was 250 i think , but worth the cost!
