all the above answers were wrong, I come from an old seafaring family, Sailors wore one ear ring, to pay for the cost of there funeral if they were washed overboard and washed ashore. The earing was there to be taken for payment to cover all cost so they could get a christian burial, instead of a paupers plot.
This bit below from a association of funeral directors website
British seamen had a gold earring placed in their left ear when they first rounded the horn. It was in the left ear as that was the shoreward side in the outbound crossing and thus pointed to land, port, or, hopefully, safe harbor. The earring had an additional significance. If they died at sea, the gold earring was supposed to provide recompense for a proper burial.
I still carry three Gold soveriegns with me at all time in case of this

In tinnitus, the sounds a person hears are actually perceptions. Since there's no actual source, they are often referred to as "phantom noises". I read that about 8% of all people in the US suffer from tinnitus so you are not the only one who hears these strange noises.
Tinnitus is actually not a disease. It is actually a symptom of a problem that is rooted deep, somewhere within your body. The problem could be a simple one like an infection in the ear, or even simpler, such as ear wax. Just clear the wax and get the infection treated, and the noises could go away. In some people, it could even be the result of a side-effect of a drug they took. Or it could be more complicated.
If you want to know more about this condition and wnat to learn how to solve naturally your problems with these annoying noises you should read this ebook: http://tinnitus.toptips.org
It helped me a lot.

Hoop earrings: some pirates believed that putting pressure on their earlobes (i.e., by wearing earrings) would prevent them from becoming seasick. Another suggestion for the purpose of a gold earring is that when a pirate died, the gold would provide some kind of funding for a funeral and coffin. - wikipedia.org

Some people believe they thought it would improve their eyesight, and so they pierced the ear on the opposite side of the eye they used for spyglasses.
Or, some people think it prevented seasickness, or that it indicated crossing the equator.
I think it was just tradition. How many of our habits or customs will make sense to people in the future? And how many of those people will dream up odd explanations for them?

Why would they need to pay for a funeral when sailors would be sown up in their hammocks with a cannonball by their feet and dropped over the side,
It was to show that they had been over the equator.
