I don't know. Anime is a Japanese form of cartoons but it's not really cartoons. I would prefer anime over cartoons any day

Honestly?
It´s a question of ignorance, while in the US and Latin America, animated characters were made only for kids in Europe and in Asia they were created as an art expresion.

That´s why when anime arrived to the US or in Latin America some people couldn´t understand why they had violent or sex content, since all the cartoons were supposed to be "for kids" censorship was applied.

It´s also related with the production and distribution, in Europe and in Asia there are a myriad of small companies which create anime in America it has been centralized to very few companies with big budgets and to distribute them censorship was applied.

I hope this answer your question.
