First of all, the winner of the award is NOT decided by fans, or else the best wouldn't win. They take the top 3 voted (popular players) and top 3 chosen (good players), and then a group that can really analyze the assets of each player makes the final decision. We know all the girls and Portuguese fans vote for C. Ronaldo and all the England fans vote for Luis Valente (so they can topple C. Ronaldo). This would definitely be an idiotic way to decide who is really the best of the best. Second of all, I love C. Ronaldo as much as the next person (unless he happens to be a Rooney-loving Englishman), but he was definitely not deserving of being the BEST Young Player this tournament. He has too much controversy surrounding him with that Rooney incident and the intentional/unintentional dives. He definitely did not play up to the same level as Lukas Podolski, and it's a shame that so many people overlooked the true best candidate for this award.
Podolski plays a clean game, so there's nothing anybody can say about his diving/faking/cheating skills. He scored 3 goals and is one of the secondary contenders for the Golden Shoe Award (along with Best Young Player), plus he was a huge asset to his team in getting to the semifinals. He's always smiling and grinning and has great sportsmanship and a sunny aura. He embodies the spirit of a true "best young player" with his upbeat, positive nature, and displays a balance of youth in his energy and maturity in his ability to work as a successful counterpart to his teammate Miro Klose in scoring. Even in the face of Germany's loss in the semifinals, he was there to comfort his teammates. His relentless pursuance of success is to be admired, and he shows that he truly deserves recognition for his efforts this World Cup.
For the people who root for Messi - Messi is a good player who shows a lot of potential, but he's still young and has a long ways to go. He wasn't a pivotal fixture of his team, as Podolski was, and nor was he even a starter. He wasn't nearly as successful as the true winner in this competition this World Cup. Comparing stats, Messi only had 1 out of 2 shots on goal, and he had 2 tackles and drew 3 fouls. Also - C. Ronaldo scored what, one goal? And it was a penalty kick. He had 9 shots on goal, the same number as Podolski, and guess who was the one who made 3 of those? Podolski had twice as many tackles (10 to Ronaldo's 5), and he drew 14 fouls to Ronaldo's 6. Each Podolski and Ronaldo made a shot in penalties to advance their respective teams to the semifinals.

No, he may have skills but he plays like a woman. I counted AT LEAST 3 times when he went to ground against France in the box looking for a penalty. All three times there was virtually no contact and he was in with a good chance of scoring, I think antics like that cost Portugal the game. I'm of the opinion that players who take the knocks and play the game like MEN are worth 10 Ronaldos...

Cause he cheated, tried to inflence the referee and ultimatly humiliated himself in front of millions of spectators - and the voting comitee from FIFA - who saw exactly what he was up to.
Too bad, he deserves to be banned from the sport for his unsporsmanlike antics.
