I have taken my car many times to car shops to be worked on to see why my eclipse sputters badly when I start it up and when I try to gain speed to continues to sputter as well as when i stop at a light for a short period of time it sputters and makes like a popping noise it sounds like the popping noise is comming from under the hood but i am not exactly sure...I am a college student and I don't have a whole lot of money to keep taking it into the shops to keep looking at it to see what was the matter. They thought it could have been bad gas but that was not the problem so I am very unsure any help would be much appreciated Thank you very much/

Have they cleaned and reconditioned the fuel injectors? If you're not the first owner, someone might have sabatoged the gas and the injectors could be clogged/damaged. Has the EGR been cleaned? Other emissions related devices? O2 sensor could be advancing or retarding the timing if it's not functioning correctly. Cleaned the TB? Idle air control valve? Are you using the correct octane of fuel? Has it been tuned up recently? Is it smoking? What color smoke?

Since it's OBD1, the computer probably isn't giving you a service light, but if it is, that code would be helpful in diagnostics.

it might be your spark plugs, mitsubishi's are notorious for having problems here and there. there also might be a slight chance that oil may have gotten into the spark plugs. try replacing the spark plugs and timing belt. if your budget is a major constraint, start off with the spark plugs first and make sure that there are no leaks. good luck!!
