Metaphor:
Some people achieve greatness and some people have greatness trust upon them.
The story is about how Richard Dreyfuss's character is exposed to a UFO and suddenly becomes obsessed with the idea of making contact with space aliens so much that he winds up tracking down the Aliens and volunteering to go up into outspace with the aliens.
Theme:
We are not alone.
It was even on the original movie posters.

You liked that movie? I paid to see it when it first came out. I thought it the most vapid waste of film, the most pointless movie I ever saw. The only thing I liked, was when the cop car goes over the cliff chasing that little Sputnik thingy or whatever it was. That's film!!! Too bad they couldn't keep uup the pace.
