It is rather unconventional, isn't it? I mean, he's already got the superpowers, but why need a cape?
It does look really cool when he flies, and if you watch Justice League, there are several fight scenes in which the cape is used against Superman. The bad guy quite often grabs onto his cape and uses it as leverage to throw Superman into a wall or something.
Overall, I'd have to say for cool looking flying and action scenes.

We've all seen The Incredibles. No Capes! Although Superman is the best superhero. We'll make an exception!

Because it look cool. The new Superman that was suppose to come with out a cape, but he looked silly.

Superman mainly wears a cape because it add dramatic effects when the sun is setting behind the building he is standing on and the wind blowing his cape of to one side. Without it, he might looks like a kamikaze pedestrian, standing on a skyscraper....

Who knows... probably from old movies with doods with swords fighting ..frocks for some...capes ... sherlock homes sort of had a cape. maybe it's where he carries a knife. maybe he has a jet pack. maybe he's just a bum magician. maybe he sneaks into the beacon theatre thru du entrance on amst. avenue and pretends to be a drape. maybe he's a shoplifter with super human strength. maybe he uses it to take a nap on park benchs. maybe he's scared and makes a doody when he flys. you know he's really gunna kick some whatever when he takes it off in a fight. he wears it otherwise he looks like a dood in his underwear. ever notice you never see him sit down with it? if batman and superman were in ny would people take them for granted and say oh ya which one has the black or red or blue cape. you know why superman wouldn't beat-up batman....because superman couldn't tell if batman was in fact batman because he had his face mask on and superman doesn't lie. who does superman envy? superman doesn't have radar.. I do. radarxrayparimeter over and out.
