It's just a stream of crap obviously coming from an impressionable mind.

The answer is: sort of. One of the major problems with this whole debate is the language involved. "Marriage" is an ambiguous term that has at least three meanings; problem is, most people still take all three meanings and accept them and obtain them all at once.
Marriage does have religious meaning; that's obvious. Some churches already choose to bestow the religious relevance of marriage upon same sex couples, some don't. Personally, I don't really care, and I especially don't care about "forcing" anyone to change their beliefs or habits.
There are also social implications that are kinda true some of the time for most straight people. You're "allowed" to have sex from that point on, and no one can really judge you for it. You're probably going to at least try to have kids. You'll probably move in together. WHile NONE of these is necessarily true about any married couple, they are cultural expectations. People ASSUME that once you're married, you're trying for kids, and probably share a bedroom etc, and those assumptions are ok with most people.
The part that's causing all the ruckus is the only part that anyone can do anything to prevent us from getting: legal protections. These do go somewhat in hand with the societal expectations (ie: a lot of them are protections for children, and inheritence etc), but the truth is, there is utterly no reason for this last definition to be denied any two people. Some people say marriage is about love; truth be told, I personally disagree. It's about a legal contract. It's a contract with a whole slew of agreements that are recognized by the government, and it's a contract that a man would have to pay a ridiculous amount of money more to obtain with another man than he would with a woman. I haven't done the research regarding raising children in couples (or more) where there is no Romantic love interest, but I do know that the studies done on children of gay and lesbians shows no difference.
