Due to the large payroll and luxury tax associated with it, from an annual revenue perspective they operate at a loss. However, the "worth" of the team is now over 800 million dollars.

They actually have lost money the past 2 years
but since George only cares about winning
losing a few million for George is nothing.

Since they charge so much for seats in the games. They get billions of dollars to support all of the expensive players like A-Rod, Derek Jeter, and Randy Johnson.
