And, when serving, after contact with the paddle does the ball have to hit your side before overing the net to your opponents?

Its been a while since I've picked up a table tennis paddle, but if I recall, one side had small little bumps of texture while the other side was smooth. Depending on your playing style, you could use the textured side to put better spin on the ball. The colors were there to indicate by sight which side was which, quickly.

As far as hitting the table before going over the net, that is just one of the rules, much like a basketball player has to dribble the ball.

If you're talking about a cheapo racquet, like the kind you get for $10 at a sporting goods or department store, there's no difference. They just have the different colors because it's traditional. If you're talking about the racquets the professionals use, there is a difference. Most will buy the blade (wooden or carbon part) separately. And then they will buy rubbers to adhere onto the blade. If they want, they can put a different rubber on each side.

yes it must hit your side first on the serve or you could spike on every serve

ALSO

just for fyi purposes, you must also physically throw your ball into the air before hitting it for it to be legal
