It would help if we didn't have warlords and dictators making sure that people can't just come in and build the systems you want. Also, who is paying for the installation and maintenance of these systems? Where are we getting the water from? If we take it from rivers, what about the people downstream that are using that water? Do they get to then starve so someone else can live? It seem simple to solve, but there is so much more to it.

It's the problem with the governments and is well documented. We have the resources. There is so much corruption in these 3rd world countries. Shipments are often intercepted and sold on the black market. As far as foreign aid that our government engages in, there is evidence that the monies are confiscated by the various leaders and used for their own personal use. For example, their mansions, Mercedes, BMW's, American college educations for their children. This definitely goes on. It is so widespread that even everyday people from these countries have not only made it known, but have told the American public to stop governmental foreign aid.The best alternative we have now are sanctioned charities with great track records such as Heifer or Christian Children's Fund. There are others. Greed is a sickness that is difficult to cure. Many of these desperately poor countries have cultural differences where life is not cherished. It is cheap and expendable. Our government has thrown billions of dollars at their rich governmental leaders. AIDS now is so rampid in Africa, it may wipe out the majority of their peoples. Do your research and give to those that make it happen. Hope this helped you so that minds like yours can come up with real solutions.

A couple of questions:
1. Who is going to pay for this?
2. Whose water are we going to take to do this?

The reason they are "desert" countries is because of a drought - which is also the reason for the famine. The neighboring countries are having water problems as well and are not going to take kindly to someone taking their water resources. And someone has to give permission, and pay for, this construction. Not to mention that Green Peace and the ecologists are going to throw a fit about damming and re-routing waterways.

Sounds like a simple, great idea, but you need to look more deeply.

Las Vegas was a desert, and it grew just fine.

Those are very obvious thoughts and ideas, and it is really easy to ask "WHY?!"

The answer revolves around corruption, politics, and money. If we could stamp out corruption in politics, we could keep the money going to the right places. People suffer all over the world, including "advanced" societies like the U.S., due to politics.

They also suffer due to their own greed and laziness, but that is another discussion.

lol, or how about we stop paying farmers NOT to grow food so foreign farmers can sell their products here.

If we taught them how to build an infrastructure they would thrive and succeed.

We are too busy planting the seeds of democracy.

And the guy above me, brilliant. You don't build it with your own cash and run it, you teach the people how to build and run it.

You don't divert the entire river. You build damns to provide pressure and power. you don't stop at water, you teach them agriculture. You provide them with a way to support themselves.

Building a water works and walking away would be idiotic.

It's not the fact that we don't know how to solve hunger, it's the fact that not enough people don't want to do anything about it.(ie politicians) We have known for quite a while what needs to be done.

We have the resources and the knowledge. It's the POLITICIANS who don't facilitate the transfer of goods, services, and funding to the world's poor.
