my friend is going to ecuador to teach. she will be living there for a year. i want to get her a good going away present.

It's always fun to give her a journal and also some other materials she may need for her teaching activities. Ecuador is a country in which schools usually do not count with all the necessary resources for learning. Probably, some books, and teaching supplies will help her a lot. In Ecuador is not easy to find a bookstore that offers school (specially teaching) supplies in English. =)

Put together a beach-themed gift bag! Run out to the grocery store and pick up a large, brightly colored plastic sand castle pail (yellow is fun) and then fill it with some items from Breezy Beach Wear (www.breezybeachwear.com)! I recommend 1-2 silk flower hair clips, a bracelet or necklace and a T-shirt.

Give her a trip journal, I've seen these I think at Barns and Noble, not sure anymore, she can keep a journal for a year then you guys can read it together. These things are so neat, she can write about new places and people she meets and maybe you can start it for her by writing on a first page how much you're going to miss her.

If your friend is good at writing letters home then buy her a leather stationary portfolio with a supply of matching stationary and pens with refill cartridges. When I studied abroad for a year my aunt gave on to me and I still have and use it 25 years later! It also lets her know that you really want to stay in touch...

I travel to horrible dirty places a lot and the best thing anyone ever gave me was this disinfection spray. My friend actually gave me a package of fun little travel things. Remember she probalby doesn't want anything to big and bulky. Just so fun little things like a sewing kit, maybe a small travel makeup or toiletry set. Little tooth paste. Maybe a small Spanish dictionary. Go to the body shop or something.

Sunscreen, books, phone cards, etc kind of in a pretty basket. Maybe a framed pic of the 2 of you or a group of friends.
