NASA is not the cause of poverty or homelessness or hunger. I think its in our best intrest to explore and learn as much as we can. There are so many other things that are meaningless that the government spends tons of cash on. Much more than is allocated to our space program. If you want to change policy i suggest you start at the voting booth and not by wishing the death of astronauts.

That is a horrible thing to say-- why would you want those people to die and waste billions spent on building the shuttle in the first place. Besides all those people who worked on the shuttle-- NASA + private sector people COULD be out of work and join the poor.

That aside, even tho the space program costs alot of money, many advances in science, products, materials and other things have come from it. Remember Velcro? A result of aerospace research.

We spend WAY more money on foolhardy things that we should address. We also spend WAY more on the military than we do on NASA. Maybe should spend less on that and the the war in Iraq and do more for the poor - let getting them to work.

To put in perspective, FY07 budget is around $4 Billion. We spend over $400 Billion each year on the military and have spent over $280 B in Iraq. You're barking up the wrong tree.

We will always have the poor- don't forget that.

The USA is not the only country that has homeless people so why are you wishing that an American spacecraft would blow up? That's really infantile to wish for the demise of people.

Doesn't Stephen Hawking think we should be able to live on another planet in the not-too-distant future? If we don't explore space, then how should we ever find if this will work or not? If you listen to Al Gore and his movie, then you would realize that the world is doomed due to the depletion of the ozone and global warming and all that jazz. Better to find a different place to live, eh?

I think people should pray for you. One should NEVER wish the death of others!! As a lover of the space program, and an Astrophysics major with friends in the business, I think you should spend your energy writing your congressman/woman instead of wishing stuff like this upon our heros of the space program. Our government wastes a LOT of money on a LOT of things that could go towards the homeless but that should not require the death of anybody. Besides, what makes the homeless at the top of the list? Why not sick kids??? Or orphans? Or something else?

Just because we are not good enough at space travel yet to see the benefits right now is no reason to give up. That would just be short sighted. Some day in the future, people will wonder how we ever survived without space travel, just like we now wonder how people survived before cell phones, air conditioning, refrigerators, toilet paper, and farming were invented. The first guy who thought to plant a seed instead of just eating it was probably criticized for wasting seeds that could feed hungry people!

Last week, I posted this question too ! And "NO" you did not respond to my question. thank goodness. How cruel you are to even consider our Shuttle with real human beings on board blowing up just to prove a point. Get a life or join the Peace Corp., or Green Peace and be of some value to humanity instead of spouting off about money. Good luck !

People said the same thing about the money we apent on the Apollo program, and even after it's cancellation, we still had world hunger. Scientific exploration is an important endeavor, if you really want to tackle social issues, write to your government representative and tell them to get off of their rear. Simply telling politicans to throw money at the problem is as ineffective as it is inadvisable, because you never know where the money will actually end up.

I think that you're a sick person. You can't claim to care about anybody if you're going to be selective about it. You can't take away the value of life from some people to give it to others. Everyone has a right to live. Saying that you hope those seven astronauts die so we can feed others is a disgusting statement. How about their families? Do you think they would share your view? Yes, I do agree that everyone should have a right to food and a decent life. But your arguement is a flawed one that is not only unfair but morbid.

I was thinking the same thing when it blasted off. Remember in the 80's when it did explode? That was crazy! But I don't understand how an entire city (New Orlean) have people still homeless, broke, desolute, hopeless and dying and we have MILLIONS to spend on going out into space.

No, I don't agree with your ideals at all.

We need to support the needy, but they only way to provide support is to have a vibrant economy, and the only way for that to happen is for research and development to occur, including space travel. All those highly paid engineers pay taxes, which support the needy.

Now, go seek counseling, as I think you are in dire need of some human based interaction.
