Thin layers. Make sure it dries completely between layers of paint. Try not to use too much water if you are using it to mix or thin out paint. Don't paint on a humid day. Just some thoughts.

Water is what makes paper warp. You can avoid using a lot of water using the methods that other people have given here, but try all of the methods you are considering on scrap pieces before you do your final backdrop.

Other options include:
•using slats of wood to back and support the cardboard
•painting butcher paper (it can be ironed if it warps) then attaching it to the cardboard with staples, tape, or glue

Any water base paint will warp it my thought is to spray it with spray paint in several layers also spray the back in several layers I design and build sets and have used cardboard a lot of times. Good luck!

Use a thicker based paint. More moisture will cause the cardboard to buckle or warp.

All you have to do is not put the paint very thick if it is thin it shouldnt warp. if it does then try getting large peices of a thinner material like bristal board

Use quck dry paint and spray it rather than brushing but don't over spray, Simply put try not to get the board too wet. Its that simple.

In addition to what others have said, it may be desirable to weight it, if possible, during the drying process.
