I've always used a blade, I have a heavy beard which grows pretty fast, basically if i want to look sharp i would have to shave daily.

I keep wanting to try an electric, since it looks faster; i was wondering if anyone tried both and you could give some advice or opinions. Thanks!

I started with electric, switched to blade for medical reasons. I thought I would get closer shaves, but I didn't. Now I'm back to electric because I got tired of all the nicks and bleeding. I get as close a shave as I ever have, the new electrics are much better than when I started. However, I don't think it is true that electric is always faster. If you want to get a shave as close as a razor, it takes time. I think that people who use electrics do not spend enough time at it, and therefore do not get the best results. You can do a quick shave with an electric if you are in a hurry and don't care too much about the result (it will still look better than unshaven). Here is the technique that I use to get the best shave with an electric:

1. Wash face with mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly and dry

2. Wait 10 or more minutes, but less than an hour, then shave.

3. Go over every part of your face, and feel with your hand by rubbing against the beard and re-do any areas not closely shaven. I like to move the razor against the grain of the beard, but I also use a circular motion in some areas. (I use a Norelco) You should not be able to feel the beard.

4. Rinse face with warm water afterwards.

I started out with a blade. Then went to several types of electric shavers and went back to the blade. If you grow a heavy beard, like me, you'll never get a close shave out of an electric one. They are faster, but I don't care what the commercial says, it's not as close as a blade.

I've found that I really like a combination of the two. I use the electric to get the heavy stuff out of the way, and I use a little pop-up attached blade on my electric to clean up sideburns and stuff.

Then I use a hand-held razor (Schick Quattro) and shave normally after that. I get close shaves, it's easy, and it really doesn't take any extra time.

I used to use regular razor then shifted to electric shaver. Since then never went back to razor. It's very convenient and gives a close shave without the risk of cut and razor bumps. You have to do it everyday but it's not a big deal you can do it even without mirror and it's faster.
