Personally I can't stand the genre...but i'd like to hear opinions from both sides...this post-hardcore stuff really doesn't interest me at all...what do you think?

Most people in this question has absolutely no idea what they are talking about. I'm not going to go into too much more detail, but emo does not mean emotional. Emo is not Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Hawthorne Heights, Dashboard Confessional, etc. They are pop bands nothing more. You don't listen to emo, and I'm willing to bet that you never have. Emo is style of hardcore music that is short for emotive hardcore. It originated in Washington D.C. It is widely regarded that the bands Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, and few others started it in the mid 80's. Rites of Spring being one of the best and most well known. They took their music in a more personal direction with a far greater sense of experimentation. Emo bands aren't on major record labels either. Emo is anti-corporate. It's what defined the bands, and it's what still defines those bands today. You will never find an emo band on Vagrant, Geffen, Drive-Thru, etc. Those bands aren't emo, and never will be.

If you want real emo check out:

Yaphet Kotto
Policy Of Three
Portraits Of Past
Heroin
Antioch Arrow
Glass And Ashes
Planes Mistaken For Stars
Ordination Of Aaron
Current
Saetia
Hot Cross
Circle Takes The Square
A Day In Black And White
Four Hundred Years
Sinaloa
They And The Children
How To Beat A Dead Horse
Ampere
Appleseed Cast
Rites of Spring
etc.

If you actually take the time to listen to these bands, you will see that it is the vocals and music that makes a band emo, not lyrics. And band such as Fall Out Boy, Dashboard Confessional, and Hawthorne Heights, do not have those musical and vocal characteristics.

I love Rites of Spring. Some original emo is actually really good. However, modern advertising has kind of turned it into a whole ridiculous image supported by a bunch of awful whiny bands, ex. Dashboard Confessional. Then people use the word to describe power-pop/pop-rock acts like My Chemical Romance and Hawthorne Heights. Also it depends what you're talking about by post-hardcore. There's the modern usage of the word, leaning towards Thursday, At the Drive-In, etc. which I like. I also like the more original genre, including Fugazi, Drive Like Jehu, and Moss Icon.

i do not fairly hate emo.. although the way (some) human beings practice it.. i advise.. like, they imagine that emos are sooo cool. And, for this reason they should be emo. And that emos scale back and bleed and really a lot all of 'em call themselves as "emo princesses and princes" and fill those loose layouts with emo-ish topics.. ---yet,take word: i love the emo kind.

alright this really annoys me. emo is emotional hardcore. ive seen my chemical romance and hawthorne heights described as emo and that is not even close...i personally prefer metalcore/hardcore/metal but i hate mainstream bands being classified as emo..

Emo sucks. You really can't call emo what passes for emo now. It's just pop-punk...and poorly made pop-punk at that. Emo was never very good when it was really around.

I like the music, but the "lifestyle" is BS. I've actually been depressed before, its nothing to brag to your friends about.

Hate it. It sucks. Most of those songs are slow and soft which I cannot stand at all.
