I am 19 years old, living with parents but I am going away to college the following summer. I went to numerous of concerts. This time she (my mom) threatened to break my legs when I told her I'm going to a concert with a group I know to a concert that is 3 hours away and am planning to stay overnight and come back. Is there any good statements to convince her?

LOL... when I saw this question on the list I thought maybe a 15 year old was asking it. You're 19!! That's pretty sad that your mom is being like that.

Try to understand where she's coming from though. She's concerned about your safety. Tell her the people you are going with are reliable, trustworthy, and safe to be around (I hope this is true!!) She's probably concerned about drunk-driving. Alleviate her fears about that. Tell her there won't be any drinking or drugs involved. Tell her you will let her know where you are spending the nite and a phone number where she can reach you. Offer to call her once during the evening.

Another thing you can do is try to get your Dad on your side. Surely he understands how you feel and that your mom is being overprotective. Ask him to talk to her for you.

If you get to go, make sure you follow through with whatever plans of safety you put into place so that your mom will realize you are trustworthy and can keep yourself safe.

Ultimately however, you are under their roof and subject to their rules. Sorry man. :((

Good luck.

Well, you're a legal adult, so technically you can do what you want. The problem is that you are still dependent, so you may need to keep that in mind.

You could offer to get a cell phone and check in with her after the concert is over, when you get to the place where you're going to spend the night, when you leave to come home, etc.

Oh, and Mom sounds a little abusive. Maybe you should just move out anyway.

Is a concert really worth ruining your relationship with your Mom? If so, than think about this:

1. Your mother isn't letting you go, as she is looking out for you and she loves you. It's a mother's duty. Explain to her all the details, it might help. (Who's going, where you're staying, etc.) If you already discussed the details with her, there's something your mother sees there that is making her hesitant, and probably with good reason.

My mother was the strictest, meanest mother alive. I was never allowed to go to sleepovers, date, etc. I hated her, and blamed her for loosing friends.

Then one day, I had a daughter. Now that I see the dangers out there for my young one, I'm glad she was strict on me. I called and thanked my mom, because I would have turned out a pretty sad, messed up person without her love and guidance.

Try seeing it from your mom's point of view.

2. Most parents viewpoints are - my house, my rules. If she drives you that crazy, as mine did, try moving out. It wasn't in my financial plan to do so, so I learned to live with her rules.

In the grand scheme of things, missing one concert is not the end of the world, even though it seems like it now. You'll think back one day and say, dang, I can't believe that got me so riled up.

Good luck and best wishes.

I'm sorry i have no real advice.. but i don't get it.... i let my 12 yr old go to the amusement park all day with his friend who is 13 by them selves....you cant keep your kids locked up. if you don't allow them to grow up and make there own decisions and become responsible for them-selves then how are you going to send them out into the world to live on there own? it makes no sence!!! she has the problem not you.

Tell her if you don't go to the concert, you're not going away to college, because you don't want her to stop trusting you. If she can't trust you for one night, how will she trust you at college? If it's not a trust thing, invite her along as a body guard.

just explain to her that you are an adult and need to have experiences on your own because when you leave for college if you have been sheltered and not let go anywhere, you will go wild. Trust me this happened to me and i ended up in prison because i went wild in college.
