You won't be able to obtain US citizenship until you've been a residing in the US as a "legal resident" for about 5 to 10 years. In order to become a legal resident you must get an american company to say you are a neccessity to their workforce, marry an american citizen, or have a child that is an american citizen. However, you can come to the U.S. on a work or student visa and stay for an indefinte amount of time.

You cannot apply for ctizenship right away, you have to apply for legal residency in the US first, which is a Green Card. To apply for a Green Cardd, you need to either have a parent or child, who is a US citizen sponsor you (sibling is OK but takes forever) or marry a US citizen or you have to be needed by America where no American can do what you would do. Some highly specialized professionals with unusual skills and languages fall in that category. The hiring company would sponsor them and has to argue to the Immigration service that no one presently legally employable in the US can fill your shoes. Once you get a Green Card, and unless you commit a crime or show that you don't want to live here or are not loyal to the US, it's a matter of years before you get your citizenship. I hear - first hand, this is no joke - that people are getting Green Cards if they're willing to go fight in Iraq.
