using IP V 4.0, which is what the internet runs on currently, assigning an ip to every computer on the network (meaning no NAT or proxy) the answer is 254^4. Ip addresses can use the numbers 1-254, and they use 4 numbers.

Theoretically, the number is unlimited. With proper subnetting, private IP addresses and a routing scheme you could network... well, more computers than exist on the planet.
