Try the Taskbar and start up menu. You should be able to click on the start button (lower left), up to settings, then taskbar and Start menu.
Good luck!

The only notification button in my tray is a Windows security button. If I want to get rid of it, I double click it, and it brings up a list of things I do or don't have as protection for my computer. A list on the right includes "change how Windows security notifies me", and clicking that allows me to unclick all the notifications. I suspect something like that may work for you.
If you mean the system updates (not the security update indicator), you can change how you recieve updates. The next time you see it, double click it, and tell it to do the downloads automatically every time you log onto the internet, or just do it automatically if you are constantly connected to the internet.

If you are using Windows XP, make sure you are logged in as an Administrator. Then, follow these directions...
1) Click on Start->Control Panel
2) Double-click on Security Center
3) At the bottom of Security Center, click on Windows Update underneath "Manage security settings for:".
You can now select how you want Windows Update to work. I don't advise that you turn off Windows Update completely. You need to install these updates on a regular basis.

To get rid of the windows update icon, you have to go into the specific settings for that in your control panel - there are settings to remove "automatic update" messages.
As far as any other icons, just go to start button, run, then type "msconfig", then enter. When that pops up, go to the last tab labeled "startup", and start unchecking any programs you don't want to start up when the PC starts. Then your systray will be clean after you restart..
