hello, i had a great answer and then i accidentally deleted it. i will try to replicate.
1-try Home Depot or Lowe's night stocking(if in your area)... they often pay shift differentials.
2-if possible, try applying for retail. be specific about what hours you can and cannot work. if you are a hard worker, you'll pick up more hours and may end up a key holder and you may qualify for minor benefits. (this happened to me. i walked up to a retail store desperate for a job and started part-time with a salary of $8/hr. a year and a half later, i was the store manager making $40K).
3-your college career center (your best bet). they should have job listings. if you are flexible you may find something new and different.
4-entry level job at a hospital (your second best bet--do a search engine search of "hospitals in Jackson Mississippi), as clerk, assistant, orderly, security. this is the "foot in the door" job you want. no matter how low the job is on the totem pole, it will probably come with benefits, which a mom can always use. good luck. see links.
5-don't give up.

I'm sure you have already checked with your local hospitals, nursing homes etc. Or have you? There are a lot of jobs in those areas that don't require you to have your degree yet. Another suggestion that may sound a little strange ( but I have seen it work) - find a place you would like to work and offer them your services for free for a day or two - a week if you can afford it. My daughter did this for a week at a firm she wanted a job with and that had an abundance of applicants. She told the person in charge that if after one week they did not think she had done a great job - they would not have to pay her for that week or hire her. It made such an impression on the guy that he agreed to it. She has been working there for several months now.

You may have to relocate near a city outside of Mississippi. If you have customer service background try temp svc's like Spherion and they should be able to find a right fit for you. Maybe in a call center or light office work. Tell them that you are currently in school and that should help you out. Get some help on your resume maybe buy some new clothes and get a new fresh look in order to help get you that job. Look also for help from One Stop Career Center that is from the govt, they often have people there to help.

Monster , Yahoo Hotjobs, Careebuilder are some of the largest job boards, where you can upload your resume. Since Craigslist, allows free job postings, many smaller companies post their
vacancies on this online classifieds website. You can search for jobs from multiple websites using aggregators like SimplyHired and Indeed. Referrals are also becoming a increasingly popular way to get hired. More details available at ttp://tinyurl.com/emdyn

Have you gone to the job board at your local hospital? They may need people for ER registrations or something like that. Also, check with your school and see if they have any jobs available or any suggestions. I would look at hospitals and doctor's offices since you are studying to be a medical assistant.
Good luck to you.

I wish you luck, but the field you are entering should be hiring, especially as baby boomers age. My suggest is to go to Amazon and search for a book called,"Go Hire Yourself an Employer." It has been out a long time, and maybe revised some, but I read it many years ago, and changed how I went into job interviews and what to look for. First company I applied to after I read the book hired me.

Try going to a "Staffing" agency or Temp placement company. Look it up for your area. You should be able to interview, and hopefully they can place you somewhere-- you can specify temporary work or temporary to permanent. Most pay wages start at $10/hour.
