its stupid. they censor my favorite word: f u c k. but not when you say *******. they don't censor ******* or ****** or ********

It has nothing to do with right wingers or conservatives -- Yahoo is extremely "lefty".
It has to do with NOT promoting what is crass and ugly about the human condition. Yes, in America we have the freedom to be disgusting, loathsome, and perverse, but having that freedom doesn't make that behavior charming. You can be low-rent/low-class all you want, but no one will think better of you for it.
That's probably not the answer you were looking for, though.
Try this one instead:
Yahoo is stuck in the middle -- they want to appeal to as a wide an audience as possible without go so far out that they begin to alienate anyone. So you can't write F*ck or *****r but you can say ******** or cracker. Yahoo ONLY represents the freedoms of the marketplace. Just like the freedoms ALLOWABLE by Yahoo on Yahoo are different in China than here in the USA.
I prefer the first answer -- having the freedom to say what you want but having the class not to.

While the b-word has a legitimate or "clean" use (although frankly, I rarely hear it used in this context), it's negative, derogatory use is far more common and yahoo's stop-word list is strictly a spell checker, i.e. it is non-contextual. I too have seen plenty that is more offensive, but being able to purchase playboy at the corner convenience store doesn't sanction or legitimise doing any of what's depicted in playboy on the floor of the local daycare in front of 2 dozen 2yr-olds.

The censoring is not done by a person. It's a computer program looking for word combinations. I once wrote something about the n a k e d truth and got booted.

The way the word is used and perceived is why. this word is used on television show and it is said for all ears to hear. Some stations will let go through and others won't.
