I need fairly simple songs with basic chords and strumming. Not bad, sappy, pop-ish love songs. More in line with folk and acoustic genres for a female vocalist in the range of Natalie Merchant, Mazzy Star...Just not melancholy suggestions. More lively and optimistic.

I agree with the first answer, without a doubt.
But, I play guitar, and I know writing a song doesn't always just come when you want it to.
However, your question is ambiguous.. it depends on the music tastes of the newlyweds.
I would personally love for someone to sing Radiohead at my wedding, but that's not a common interest.
Find out which bands they like, listen to a few of their songs, and find one that you feel is fitting.
Worst case, just ask them! ^_^
I hope I've been of help.

You could try writing a song. I'm sure the newlyweds would like an original more than a cover.

I like Such Great Heights by Iron and Wine. I'm not sure if it's good for a wedding...maybe it is.
