They have extremely thick fur. Whereas you and I have 1 hair per follicle, they have something like 30 - 60. It keeps them warm (they're from the Andes where's it's chilly and dry), and it's so thick that it suffocates nasty things like ticks and fleas.

If you ever have or take care of a chinchilla, keep it cool (below 80 degrees) and dry. They can't take warm, humid conditions. We keep the house at 72, and they think the air conditioning vents are the greatest thing since raisins. If one starts having symptoms of a heat stroke (lethargic, dopey - same way we would act), try to cool the area down if possible, or move the animal to a cool location out of the sun, like the basement (moving stresses them, so be careful). The blue ice things that people use to keep food cold in a cooler can also be used in an emergency.

Well they have a thick layer of fur. Their original habitat is in the mountaneous regions in the andes, where it is rather cold. So they need the thick layer of fur to protect them.

Hope this helps, it came from memory, i used to have a chin, but it passed away last summer from heat stroke.
