Because burning it ceremoniously is a sign of respect. If a flag ever becomes tattered or torn, faded, or is thrown to the ground, it is supposed to be burned in ceremonious way. I'm not entirely sure what they mean by "ceremonious" but if you take it to any VFW, Boy Scouts Organization, American Legion, military base or a variety of other places, they will do it for you. I think it's basically because the symbol of our country is supposed to be clean, bright and perfect. So if the flag is ripped or really faded, it isn't as good of a symbol as it should be. So people buy new flags and burn their old ones (and what better day than the day of our freedom). Besides, there's no other way to dispose of flags because they cannot be thrown in the trash, flushed, or anything else.
By the way, it has nothing to do with freedom of speech. Freedom os speech is the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship. It has nothing to do with burning flags. It's also just used as an excuse for everything Americans could ever do that would piss anyone off.
Our forefathers did not fight and die to preserve the flag, but rather they fought and died to protect our right to burn it, just as our founding fathers did to the British flag. The burning of the flag is an act that asserts the right of the people over the government. The denial of the right to burn the flag is the assertion of the government to rule the people. America is ruled by the people, not the government, and it is in fact our patriotic duty, at this juncture to assert that duty(www.flagburning.org).

Some people burn the flag because they are angry and lack the imagination and creativity to properly express their anger. If they were children, it would be called a tantrum. Hopefully the flags are made in the USA; every one who burns a flag probably bought it, and that helps the economy. If Congress had any brains at all, it would require that all American flags be made fire resistant. Sure, people could make their own, but who cares if some jerk burns an ugly flag he made while dropping LSD? Just wouldn't hold the same meaning.

Legally, if a flag touches the ground you are supposed to burn it. Also, if a flag is old and ragged or just filthy and you want to dispose of it, the only legal way to do so is to burn it. So maybe those things just coincidentally happened on the 4th. And which is why it is insane to try to get a constitutional amendment against flag burning.
You know how many incidents there were in the US last year of flag burning? 4. 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that warrants a constitutional amendment??? Methinks someone is desperately trying to shift focus away from something else they are trying to hide.

Outside of the obvious ceremonial putting to rest a worn flag it is a mark of protest.
Burning a flag is a symbollic protest. It is meant to hurt none and express physically a particular frame of mind. It is done to show symbollically that the government is being oppressive and not living up to the standards that it should be. It says that the actions of the government have and\or are leading up to all that the nation stands for (this is reflected in the flag) is going up in flames. It is done to call attention to issues that most people ignore through doing something extreme, yet non harmful, to raise awareness.

There could be two reasons. #1...They are burning them in a respectful ceremony to dispose of them because they are old and torn. This is usually done by the veterans, military, and other reputable organizations. #2...Some disrespectful Americans burn it to "protest". This is not covered under the freedom of speech. The American flag is not just a piece of cloth. It is a symbol of The United States of America and should be treated as such. Our forefathers have fought and died for this symbol of freedom. What some people do just makes me sick.

They say that they are exercising their freedom of speech. Let 'em go to China and burn the Chineese flag on May Day and see what happens.

If it is meant respectfully, it is because the flag is no longer serviceable. This is the proper way to destroy a flag.

I always thought burning was a sign of protest, that's why congress tried to make it illegal, and failed by one vote in the senate (66-34)
