i have been plaing for twenty years and i do both as far as reading music and tabalature. as far as to which one i like better its a toss up. if i am familiar with the song i like tabs but if i dont know the song i like to use sheet music. the reason is simply that tabs do not give you any idea as to the time of the song or in other words with tabs you have no idea how long to hold a note for and so on... so with tabs you have to know the song or at least have a copy on cd to listen to so you can get the timing down.
to answer you question the mass of tab sites on the web suck and in my experience they have gotten it wrong. the reason is that many of theese sites anyone can post their tabs weather they are right or not. so for me this idea is frusterating. there is a free downlaod on download.com called guitar vision. i highly reccomend this tool as it is very cool. although you have to buy the songs from them they are right and easy to learn in this format most songs are 4 to 6 bucks a piece and well well well worth it. also there is an online school that cost money as well that i would reccomend and that is called guitarschool.com. lessons from theese guys are worth every penny and if i remember right they cost around 50 bucks for a course.
also you might want to stop by your local music shop and pick up a beginners guitar lesson book to teach you how to read music. I am 95% self taught when i get to something tough that i need help with i buy a lesson or two from a local teacher and then i am off and running again. my first band was in high school and we were a hair/cover band. we evolved into more alternative sounding group in the early ninties and then broke up.... ahh the memories and the girls...wink wink.. then i took a few years off and then i started a blues band which i still play in today we are a three piece and we also have country band that is more or less the blues band plus a few more members and i have to tell you the country band is killing the blues band in bookings almost 4 to 1.... go figure....whoda thunk that..... i have to admit i never in a milion years would have thought i would be in a country group..... anyway have fun with that guitar and good luck!
