I think because they have prevented it and it's important to show the American public that they are helping to protect us. Also, it sends a message to terrorists that they can't get away with it, because we'll catch them.

Sometimes authority figures discuss certain elements of cases in order for those who will take credit for terrorist actions to have their "bragging rights". If they start to talk about their plans and actions with other this tends to start the leads needed by the FBI to catch those involved. People who commit terrorist acts are ones who seek the fame that goes with hurting others. The FBI know how to manipulate the minds of those who plotted against the tunnel in NY and although we may think we are giving away too much information when we go public, it's not an accident or a mistake they are making. They have thought over what they will share with definite consideration. Believe in the knowledge of these trained members of the FBI. Although they make mistakes like us all, we tend to focus on what they maybe doing wrong instead of what they maybe doing right.

To inform others of the correct information before gossip and rumors start. If the government would have withheld this information, someone would have eventually leaked the information, gossip would have started, and before too long the news on the street would be that there was a plot to blow up 1/2 of NY. People would have started to freak out and believe what they heard from others instead of the news which followed the gossip.

No. It's all propaganda, spread out to support the violent policies of the Bush administration.
Who says that there really was a plot? We only have the word of Bush and the FBI for it. Both have an agenda and their vested interests in making us believe that we are threatened by some shady "terrorists". The real threat to world peace and security, to liberty, human rights and in fact to all of us comes from the White House.

My opinion is that so the tunnel will not be used a a plot to america so america can realize that there is no where to destroy , or hide the public enemy or life of the U.S . Also so the U.S. can be used to help others know what they can , and cannot do .

Allay the fears of the general public who may have got a wind of the said plot;
Distract from other issues which may be derogatory to the efforts of the agency;

Ideas of stuff the FBI is already looking at? There is no value in the terrorists knowing that the FBI busted one plot, but plenty of value to the rest of us.

One of the biggest keys to democracy is an open media. If you pay attention to the news they are saying "hey, look at these dumb terrorists. Look at this plan and see why it wouldn't work." If the government arrested people secretly, who says that anyone who doesn't agree with the government and who tries to change things will get arrested. Look at China, they cannot even use the internet without government censorship. Is that what you want for the good old USA?
