A rat that didn't want to lose HIS as$. I never did understand those types of statements. I don't give a $hit? Of course not, why would you give one...who would accept it?

I really won't research that origin of that saying, but the author of that statement must have spent a lot of time observing, analyzing, classifying and maybe even roasting and devouring the said parts of the rats over a lifetime, to have compiled a metaphor comprosing it.

well I know I don't give a rat's as$.....but I'm just waiting around until my as$ grows together to see if anybody does come up with the derivation of this phrase....interesting
