Hy, my name is Danilov( my real name) and I'm a vet from Romania. What many people just like yourself think is not as appropriate as asking yourself what kind of conditions can you make for the pet you want to get. The most clean and also perfect exotic pet is a tropical fish. Here I can give you some pointers, cause I breed them ( 5 years next month_got over 150 species :). Funny little critters. The best fish if you don't have enough time to spare is a Vietnamese Fighting fish or Beta Splenders. You don't need so much equipment for maintaining a good quality of life for these fishes. They have gills but also a reminiscence of a lung ( they where amphibious creatures in the distant past, so they can breath air, so you don't have to change their water so often. They eat very little, 2 grams of food per week, depending on the size. They can grow up to 2 inches, but they are very aggressive. Not towards people but to other fish. Get a male and put a mirror in front of him. He will see red in front of his eyes and start a battle with the fish in the mirror :) Don't worry he won't hurt himself. You can find them in you local pet store, but in my country is not so easy. Had to go all the way to the Philippines to get some breeders. Cheers. Hope you've made up your mind. ( When they go in battle mode- the male is the warrior- he starts changing a little his color and distends his unbelievable fins looking like a lion getting ready for rumble.)

It depends on who will be responsible for it and how much room you have.
For small, caged pets, the best is a rat - honestly. They are smart and friendly and interact with you like a dog. Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and such are not that interesting. You can teach a rat tricks, and they are very friendly. If you're looking for a first pet for a kid, rats are the ticket. Check out the Rat and Mouse club at www.rmca.org.
For bigger pets, I like a medium-sized dog that doesn't bark too much.

a pet rock. you don't have to feed it ,clean up after it, it doesn't make the neighbors mad because it wakes them up in the middle of the night, and the landlord won't charge you an extra deposit, because it might tear up something. if your not cool with this plan try neopets. you can adopt a pet online. you feed them everyday, buy them toys, play with them, and take them on roadtrips. pretty cool.
