Carlbad's biggest attraction is the Legoland theme park, which is primarily geared toward children.

There are also two major spa/golf resorts in Carlsbad: La Costa and Aviara. Both are really nice, and expensive - I believe the Aviara golf course was designed by Arnold Palmer.
There are also the flower fields in Carlsbad, which are nice during flower season.

Carlsbad has beaches to see, three lagoons for nature watching, and a factory outlet mall for shopping.
Fun things to do in San Diego - it really depends on what you like to do, and who you are with.
During the day, here are some fun things to do in San Diego:
Check out some cool outdoor places - there are many different beaches in San Diego, each with their own best features. Some are good for surfing, others are good for sunbathing and people watching. Others are good for walks or snorkeling or taking the family.
Other daytime fun might include visiting the San Diego Zoo, located in Balboa Park. Balboa Park also houses several nice museums and gardens. You can also take in the view from Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma or the Presidio hill just above Old Town State Park or the ocean view at Torrey Pines State Reserve. For unique shopping experiences, check out downtown La Jolla, or Seaport Village (on San Diego Bay) or for serious shopping, go to Horton Plaza (downtown) or outlet shopping in Carlsbad, Viejas, or San Ysidro. There are also many resorts for tennis and golf. For the kids, you can go to Legoland in Carlsbad, or Sea World. There's also plenty of opportunities for sailing, day hikes, surf kayakking, mountain biking and rock climbing.
At night, there are lots of great restaurants and clubs in the Gaslamp Quarter (downtown), and some more nice restaurants in Little Italy (downtown). Pacific Beach's bars are popular with college students for drinking, and Hillcrest has a trendy nightlife, and is the center of the region's gay and lesbian community. Ocean Beach has a more laid back nightlife. Old Town has some nice tourist-oriented Mexican places with good food and big margaritas. There's lots of movie theaters around town, and also some decent performing arts venues - for concerts, and plays.

In Carlsbad, there are the outlets, the beach, the flower fields (which I personally didn't find very exciting) and Legoland. There are also some cute shops and restaurants in the "downtown" area of Carlsbad. In San Diego, there is the zoo and the Wild Animal Park (this is closer to the carlsbad area), Balboa Park (by the zoo and there are some cool museums and stuff), downtown, Horton Plaza, Seaport Village, Coranado, Sea World, Old Town, lots of beaches. You could also take a dinner cruise on the bay. The Fashion Valley mall is nice too. Down by the Cabrillo Nat'l Monument are some tidepools that are fun, especially if you have kids. And the La Jolla Coves have sea lions.

In San Diego, you can check out the Gas Lamp district...cool shops, bars, and restaurants. There's also Coronado Island. One of the three Olympic training centers is in Chula Vista (south of San Diego). The Navy has a big facility, you might be able to take a tour. Balboa park is interesting too.
Don't know a thing about Carlsbad.

Carlsbad is a wonderful place. Walk around the lovely streets, shops, galleries, great places to eat. The beach , is a delight. Farmers Market, Wednesday afternoon. Hop on the Coaster, takes you along the Pacific Ocean, to downtown, San Diego. The Harbor has a Marina, looks over North Island. There is a ferry that goes to Coronado Island. See the Victorian architect, also the Hotel. This area you want to see, is endless of things, places, etc. Just have a wonderful time.

Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Coronado, La Jolla beaches, Old Town, Balboa Park, Mission San Diego de Alcala (if you're Catholic). Depends on what you are into but there are opportunities galor for outdoor activities. If you're legal hit Temecula for some wine tasting. Point Loma is pretty...great lighthouse and tide pools. Don't bother with Legoland. We just went and even my five year olds got bored after a few hours, it's dumpy, too. Spend your money at SeaWorld...way better.
