I think the answer is just that not a lot of them have become interested enough to pursue a career. Bill Lester is currently driving full-time in the Craftsman Truck Series and has aspirations to make it to the Cup level. In order to get anybody interested, regardless of race or gender, it really starts when they are young.

Maybe the best reason is money.Unlike other sports racing in general and Nascar in particular requires a hefty dollar investment just to get started.Of course once you get to the Nascar level the money end of it becomes the car owners problem. In order to get to that level though you have to be racing somewhere in order to be noticed. Unfortunately few African Americans or Hispanics have access to the amount of money necessary to go racing.Without the opportunity to participate and learn at the lower levels of racing obtaining a Nascar Truck,Busch,or Cup ride aint happening. There is hope though Nascar has become aware of this problem and is currently working to resolve it not only for the above mentioned groups but to include women as well.We can only wish them luck in this endeavor I believe Nascar will eventually get it right they usually do.

I'm a bi-racial person (black and white ethnicity) who adores NASCAR and can't get enough of it! I have often wondered the same question about why people of color are, for the most part, not interested in NASCAR and are not fans. I think there are a few reasons. One is that at the races, since it is a primarily southern dominated sport, some potential fans of color aren't interested in going because they would feel insecure and out of place in a sea of people who don't look like them. Racism is still persistent wherever you go, and without other people that look like them, people of color will always feel slightly or very out of place. I'm not saying that all southerners or nascar fans are racist, but I am saying that because the south has been known to be racist in the past and nascar has a southern beginning, people might think it's not a diversity-friendly kind of sport. Another reason there aren't people of color is that there are no sponsers that people of color use. Another reason could be that people of color think racing is a redneck or hick sport, and don't want to be a part of that image (even though certainly NOT all nascar fans are rednecks!!! I'm not!!) Until NASCAR somehow grasps more diversity in the sport, you won't see many fans of color. I'm a fan of color, and I'm sure there are others out there. NASCAR has seemed to be trying to make changes to make things more diverse, and I think someday there will be all sorts of races gathered together to watch the amazing sport of NASCAR!

I think there aren't a lot of fans of Nascar who are black or hispanic because there aren't many drivers who are black or hispanic! Although, there aren't many woman racers, but there are still tons of woman fans! So, good question! Maybe they feel uncomfortable because obviously they would be a very small minority!
Maybe drivers of their race such as Bill Lester, etc. will open the doors for these fans! Not many played golf either (with the exception of OJ) before Tiger, but I bet since then the numbers have increased slightly!

I think it's because us NASCAR fans are stereotyped as racist rednecks, that is far from the truth, yes there are some bad eggs out there but a majority of us are there for one reason, to watch 43 cars raise some hell!! You will get picked on more for wearing a #24 shirt than anything else, just ask Dateline NBC. They sent minorities to several races with a hidden camera, not one racial statement was said, but the Gordon fans caught hell.

good question...but i don't know...and to randeshia, how is that the non-dangerous way when NASCAR has tons of safety precautions? racing on the street you're on your own, racing for NASCAR not only are there tons of things done to the actual car for the driver's safety but they have paramedics standing by and always ready just in case...please explain that to me...cuz that doesn't make any sense

Well lets see it really started out kind of slow anyway and right now there are few minorities in the sport so it is not going to be as popular as many others. Sports just like cycling or boating or fishing are not as watched as more popular sports like baseball, football and soccer so they are not on alot of other channels other than special ones for that specific sport.

SINCE THE 50'S THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL AFRICAN-AMERICAN DRIVERS.THE ONE WITH THE LONGEST RUN IN NASCAR WAS THE LATE WENDELL OLIVER SCOTT WHO HAS BEEN PLACED IN THE INTENATIONAL MOTORSPORTS HALL OF FAME AT TALLADEGA. THE FIRST AFRICA-AMERICAN DRIVER WAS NAMED CHARLIE SCOTT (NO RELATIONS TO WENDELL) IN 1956 HE DROVE FOR CARL KIEKHAEFER.THEN IN THE LATE 70'S EARLY 80'S WILLY T RIBBS DROVE A FEW RACES.
