Low freon and/or dirty air filter. Cheapest first try is to change your filter (face it, it probably needs it anyway). If that fails, you'll need to call a HVAC tech to service your unit.

First check if your a/c has the apropiated size for the room to be cooled, if it's so, then the most predominant cause of freeze up is low air flow caused by dirty coils, dirty filter or low fan speed. Other cause is low on freon. Also look for a flase air pulling through the unit due to a rusted out or loose body panel.
If everything is all right, then your air conditioner will freeze up because you have turned down the fan speed and not the temperature setting. Too low of an air flow over the coils will cause them to freeze. If you are too cold turn down your thermostat first, then adjust your blower/fan speed.

very simple ot doesnt matter about the size of your room or anything like that
if you know how put a lil freon in it
if you dont have someone add a lil bit (if it is working for a while before freezing up it shouldnt take more that a few onces FYI in case someone tries to over charge you)

at work our air conditions is always being turned down to low (67 or lower) so the condinsation freezes and shuts the a/c down - try turning up your thermostat

There could be ice inside! When you're not home, turn it off so the ice can melt!
