I love Sears! My son was born in November and we've had his pictures done at Sears every three months since birth. They are all digital now so you see the pics as they are being taken. If you plan on having several sessions in the next couple of years check out their Smile Saver's Card! It's a good bargin and it's valid for a couple of years. When I am getting ready to have pictures taken I go to the Sears website and browse their props and backgrounds too. I've always had pleasant people who were very willing to listen to my ideas. One more thing I just remembered lol when you have Sears do your pictures you are able to share the pics with friends and family online! I really like that because then they can see ALL the photos and not just the one(s) that I order and send to them! Here's the addy: www.searsportrait.com good luck!

I have always had excellent photos taken at Sears Portrait Studio. See if you can view a couple sessions or see some of their portraits before hand. That way you can see if the photographer will work. Remember, you can request a photographer, if you have a favorite.

We always took my son to walmart. We would for sure make an appointment and we went every month for the first year the every three months. It costs under 20 bucks you can get the Package and then ask for the disc its and extra 10 bucks, and download on your computer. Or they often have a small package when you pick up the pics for 10-20 in a mat, of all the pics you took. Now since five years hes been in school. And the school has someone come twice a year.

Frankly, I'd get digital camera and take some yourself. We responded to a promotional at our local Sam's Club - get a nice 8x10 for $10 or something. When we got there there was an additional $5 sitting fee. When the pictures came in, they wanted like $90-$200 for different packages of pictures. The pictures were nice, but my digital camera does just as good a job and I can get the photos printed at Walgreen's for far, far cheaper.
I was unimpressed.

I like The Picture People. I think they have better quality photographers than Sears or other chain stores like that. You get your pictures very quickly, too.

I know that most people who have answered this question seemed to love Picture People, but I have nothing but bad experiences with them. Firstly, all the employees seem to be teenage girls who are to wrapped up in each other to much care about what they're doing. My daughter was very cooperative, but the girl just wasn't really putting any effort into what she was doing, and was rushing. As a result, all of the photos of my daughter are off-centered and half-a.....well, you get it. I would suggest Olan Mills or Sears!

I love Sears portraits, I have used them with all three of my children and have never had a bad picture taken with any of them plus they are reasonably priced. I went with my sister once to Wal-mart (they were cheap so I thought I would try them) and I will never do that again, the pictures turned out terrible.

The Picture People take some really cute photos. Plus you can always find good coupons for them on the web, or get on their mailing list too.
The trouble with Wal-Mart photos is actually with the photos themselves, not with how the poses turn out, because I have seen some cute ones. But we had Wal-Mart do our son's first Christmas, 8 years ago, and now the photos are yellowing and fading. Just not good quality photo paper or something?
Anyhow, that's something to think about.

Look for a good wedding photographer. Most of them also do portraits, and would be able to take beautiful pictures. Don't go to mall studios.
This is a California-based wedding photographer, but you can see that she also has a portfolio of children's portraits: http://www.ltphoto.com/ It should be easy to find someone similar in NY.
