It depends how you want to help. Try looking at the Good Samaritan. Every year, I buy one of their sponsorships, etc. and give it as a Christmas gift. For example, last year, I bought a pair of rabbits from them in honor of my best friend. That pair of rabbits will reproduce and can be sold for profit in many African villages. The Good Samaritan awards these gifts to families and attempts to help them obtain better financial situations. Just a thought!

Your own pocket. If you think for a milli-second that any money that you send to any charity is actually going to make it to the poor folks that the media parades in front of you, then I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale that you can buy.
Been there, seen it first hand - save yourself first.

Keep your money. All the aid has gone striaght to the warlords & dictators. Didn't that little incident in Mogadishu teach you anything?
