Actually, someone can put their ear to your tummy around 7 1/2- 8 months and be able to hear the heartbeat. It's just really hard to find it because you basically have to have your ear right over the chest, so a moniter would make it a lot easier! y husband was able to hear our baby's when we went to the doctor yesterday, but the doctor had to point out exactly where to put his ear. Congrats, by the way!

While your heart is just behind your chest wall and adult size, the baby's heart is enclosed in dense muscle (the uterus) and floating in fluid (the amniotic fluid) and then behind it's chest wall.
It's highly unlikely that the human ear could pick that up with out amplification provided by a stethoscope. Maybe by the time the baby is at term, it's possible but not likely. It would be hard for the baby to be in position for it's chest to be right up against the mom's belly wall.

Threre are so many other noises..intestine gurgles, your heartbead, your breathing, I don't think it is possible to hear a baby's heartbeat. Think of when you go swimming and someone claps under water. You can hear it if you are under water, but not out of the water. Or the other way around. Baby is surrounded by alot of water.

If you get the Bebe Sounds monitor (about $25 where they sell baby stuff) You should be able to hear it very soon. I think it's around 24 weeks. You can't hear it just by listening with your ear, because baby's surrounded by the placenta.

The baby's back would have to be right up against your tummy in the right spot or else it nearly impossible maybe in late late pregnancy
