Harry Potter is always a good choice for boys of that age, as is something from the new Superman Returns movie. Powers Rangers Mystic Force is quite popular right now and Power Rangers S.P.D. are still popular.
Other than movie and cartoon heroes, A model kit is good, especially if supervision is available. Cars and airplanes are still popular models to build. AT that age I was also into reading and I happened across The Hardy Boys series tucked up in the eaves from my father's childhood days. I remember spending many a rainy afternoon up in the eaves or my bedroom ready those timeless tales.

Give him something he likes, of course! Does he like nature? If so, take him for a walk in a nice park and have a picnic lunch. Fly a kite too!
Of course, if you want to give him something material, then I suggest a set of paints and some canvas.
Oh, and don't give him anything that enforces the gender binary. Stay away from giving him toy cars/super hero toys just because he is a boy.
