Carpool, keep maintenance up on your vehicle, don't speed, check tire pressure, get a more fuel efficient vehicle (I don't think the hybrid vehicle is in range for the "average people")

Based on the economic principles of supply and demand as supply exceeds demand price will fall. (Increased prices are the result of demand exceeding supply). Most have heard of or read emails suggesting a boycott of an oil company, usually for a week or 2. This will have no impact, since we'll get our gas at another station and the boycotted station might suffer but the oil company won't feel a thing.
If every driver in the country simply reduced driving by 10% (if you drive 1000 miles per month find a way to cut that to 900 miles). That reduction would equal approximately 5,000,000 gallons of gas per 1,000,000 drivers not sold every month. That's 60,000,000 gallons per year. This decreased demand will result in a surplus which will push prices down.

Agreed! Gas prices are obscene! Take the bus, walk, ride a bike, get a moped or a scooter. Organize your trips, so that you don't have to drive out of your way for things and so that you don't have to drive every day. Don't drive gas hogs, SUV's, etc. Keep your car well cared for (change air filter, oil filter, etc regularly). Write your political representatives, demanding that they work to lower gas prices and support the development of adequate alternative fuel sources. By the way, ARCO and COSTCO usually have cheaper gas prices than most other stations. Good luck & keep pedaling!

It's not all politics. It's also a matter of supply and demand. 30 years ago we were using a muich smaller percentage of the world's available supply. If you want the gas prices to go down, stop using it so much. Ride a bike, take a bus, whatever you want to do. The oil companies will know why their sales have dropped, and they will drop prices in an attempt to bring you back.

If you want gas prices to be lower, then start researching on how to have 100% battery-operated cars. I doubt it's going to happen though for these two reasons:
1) Oil companies can take a chunk of their profit to hire the best damn lawyers coming out of Harvard to make sure that lawmakers don't pass anything unfavorable to oil companies.
2) Car manufacturers wouldn't want battery-only cars to flood the market because they make a profit through service charges in addition to unit sales.

We can quit buying vehicles that get less than 25 mpg. We'd cut the demand by 25-50%. Lower demand equals lower prices.
Idiots driving around in hummers getting 11 mpg are heavily responsible.

The only way in which the average people can contribute to lower gas prices is to burn less of it.

If the government would regulate the oil industry, this wouldn't be such an issue. As it stands, the profit margin for gas corporations is higher than ever, and their execs continue to fatten their wallets.

If we all started riding our bikes and walking instead. As long as there is a demand, the price will always be high. No demand, the price will go low.
