Your question is really a complete thesis rolled into one ball, and it's actually a great one.
You ask the essential question of social networking: If you can make FAKE FRIENDS, is it SOCIAL anymore? Another critical question is, "Is it a social site or do they want more of you to sell ads?" Answer one is NO, answer two is a little messier. The social (and anti-social) nature of man has made networking a sticky wicket for years. You realize that folks like to be in with a clique, and that since the internet is purely commercial (it has to make money to function) and has been controlled by commercial interests for around 20 years (the military/government part is now on it's own), somebody has to make money. The owner of that site is not just being nice and letting you use his servers. Just so that you can understand it's the same as if I wanted you to buy a yoyo. I want it to be special in your mind to buy a yoyo. If not I will go bankrupt and not sell yoyos again.
The second thing (most important maybe) is that you do not feel social there. Honor your heart, and your spirit will be free.
The third thing to see is that some feel the same and are looking for something themselves. The only place to search then might not even be here. You don't need to see someone to be their friend, but you have to find them nonetheless.
You have almost answered your own question, as disappointing as it is to you. Without the internet, it was just as hard a question to ask. You don't have to jump through hoops to be happy though. Friends come to you, and you come through to you also. Friends never need to update membership files.

We both choose the 12-step procedure. i'm excellent there with you! from time to time i imagine that they ought to have some evil subliminal message that flashes as we seem at questions and solutions that causes us to save coming lower back because, certain, i'm the following each day. certain, I admit it, i'm a Yahoo addict! I used to have a existence. i'd in ordinary words go surfing now and again. It took me 6 months to amass 10,000 factors and attain element 6 even although i'm getting a honest variety of "merely excellent answer" awards because i attempt to be thorough, informative and a minimum of semi-interesting. Then, March seventeenth, I reached element 6 and became passionate about seeing merely how in a timely fashion i ought to attain element 7. Now my dogs is able to divorce me; my relatives and acquaintances are making plans an intervention; and that i'm the following questioning what i am going to do to score some extra "merely excellent answer" awards. unhappy, isn't it? because I already made it to point 7! yet I were given addicted attempting to get off element 6 and now I’m hooked. i am going to't end even although I were given to point 7. it really is like "Gee, if i'm getting some extra 'merely excellent answer' awards then i am going to attain 50,000 factors!" some human beings have a monkey on their lower back, we've a Yamster! Tenacious little rodent!

I'm with you on this I believe that there are two reasons
1 some people like collecting things some like stamps some just like random friends
2 some people are insecure and do it just for the ego boost if you have friends like this you should always be trying to build up their self confidence

MySpace is addicting because there are so many different people out there and we as a society are becoming more and more nosy about people's lives.
I use it to listen to music. There are so many different types of music out there and MySpace is fabulous for exposing people to music.

Some people use it to meet new friends and business connections. I'd be leery of putting anything on it that a potential employer might see that would cast me in a negative light.

I know that the reason I have many friends is because of my music. When I release something new, I want everyone to know about it via bulletin posts... Also, bulletin posts for parties is nice. Even if you dont know know everyone on your friends list, you can still let many ppl know about something going on.
