Grass is there so you don't track mud into the house after you've finished running through the sprinkler in the back yard on a hot summer day.

At first this question to most people seems almost impossible to answer, science wise no.,

but this is in a chain of question of why we even humans exist:

Grass (botanically) is in a large family called " Miscathus"
Miscathus it's latin name means: bladed, striped or branched.
Miscathus family can be sorted out into many sub sections-
1. Maize which is aka : corn species
2. Bamboo family species
3. Wild grass, or dry grass found on plains
4 .Highland grass or alpine species.

Grass exists because it is a highly adaptible plant, and sends out rhizome style roots.
With more then 23,000 know species in over 190 countries.
Grass can be found in the most coldest places like the Faroe Islands and the hottest places like the Death Valley, Calif.

It's almost unanswerable but WHY grass is here, it was probably a genetic offspring of another( invasive) evolved species, possibly all the way back to molds or primitive seed weeds that made it ashore millons of years ago.

One thing is sure, some Dinosaurs ate grass at 2.1 billion yrs.
and fossilized grass has been found in coal samples.

So depending on your research, you might have to discover what came first the grass or the seed of grass?
no one knows for sure.

this was a good question.

Picture this you get home from work on a hot sunny day. Go out in to the garden and lay on the grass with a nice bottle of red wine and relax. Then all your worries from the day just fade away.Thats why we have grass.
