Many free sites aren't out to make a profit, but just to get enough funds in to keep the sites going. Every time you see a banner ad or other advertisement on one of these sites, that means a company has paid the free site to place their advertisement on the site. This generates new business leads for the advertised companies and the free sites use the revenue generated from these ads to keep the shirts on their backs.

they have got 80 million users and so charge high for their advertising because it gives higher exposure. It does this by a pay per click system, so if u click on a myspace ad they charge the company lets say $0.50 or something like that and imagine how many times the 80 million users click on ads, thats how tom makes his dosh.
