I absolutely abhor it. Whoever says it's not hurting anyone is completely out of their mind. I've noticed (and this is true of those job applications mentioned, because I've had the pleasure of deciphering many) that no one has bothered with learning the correct way to speak and spell English and have opted to take the lazy approach in written communication. What's worse is that it's tolerated. Now we're stuck with a generation of mal-educated people who are now our future leaders. Be afraid people. Be very very afraid.

It must save valuable seconds in the race to sound retarded.
I know every time I'm forced to actually type a word in its' entirety, I feel like that 1/2 calorie I burned doing so was wasted energy...
Or maybe it's some sort of code. They'll recognize you as an outsider immediately if you don't substitute numbers for syllables, or boil all the verbs from a word.
I bet Y! spellchecker has all the popular ones in its' database and just says 'done'...
College thesis of tommorrow: "Y ppl r irrit8ed by u b4 they evn meat u"

edit: hehe well now I've gone through some of these answers and looks like you pissed off some teeny bobbers - better be careful - they'll catch you sleeping sometime and steal your grammar skills - assimilate you

I really don't mind it at all. I only use it on appropriate occasions, i'm not gonna write an essay in this so called "teen text" . And for someone who dislikes " Teen Text " and is aggavated by teenagers who don't spell , at least try to learn how to spell correctly yourself before criticizing others. Lay out an example after you criticize us so we know the correct way o humble one
$ - ). I wouldn't talk to someone who doesn't like it or use it. So it doens't really affect anyone negatively, we do know how to spell correctly , but sometimes we choose to take the easy way out, and we that use it understand each other, if you don't , talk to the person about it. It's not all teenagers that do it, you can't generalize us into one group . There are many different languages in this world, and i guess this " Teen Text" is just one of them. Either learn it or forget or live with it, it's just how things are. ( * v * )

The crazy thing is, there are some people who want to change the way we spell to how the teens text today, which is basically, shortening words and/or typing them who they sound. I was reading paragraphs of how things would be written if this were to take effect, and I could hardly make out anything! It was completely disturbing. I don't think we should change the way intelligent people are supposed to write and speak, just because of lazy people. How difficult would it be to write an extra "yo" in front of that "u"? It's makes me sick. I'm 20 years old now and never in my life, not even when I was in my younger teenage years, did I ever write like that.

It depends... I think it's a little ridiculous when they type a whole paragraph like you, it takes to long for others to figure out what they are trying to say. But if they are taking notes in class or something and shorthanding there personal things then that's different as long as they understand what they are trying to get across (and fix it before turning in). I used to shorthand all the time, then later rewrite it in real english (helped in studying too).

Your future bosses will have the great pleasure of firing you for your lack of communication skills.
Good luck!

It is driving me crazy! They will wonder why they can't get jobs, other than McJobs, why they have no intelligent friends and no future. They need to smarten up, get with the program, and put some effort into things that are important in their lives.

I'm pretty intelligent I think. When texting and IM'ing I use it just for convenience. When you are texting on your celly you want to get it down quickly. I am not going to write "U r crzy, lol" on a Literature exam genius!
